Visa Information
Foreigners traveling to mainland China need a visa, which should be obtained in advance. There are 4 kinds of visas: Tourist (L), Business (F), Work (Z), and Student (X/F). Once in Beijing, your visa can be extended by visiting the appropriate Chinese government offices or using a visa agent to help with the process.

With approximately 50,000 restaurants to choose from, eating out is very much part of living in Beijing. You can find just about any kind of restaurant in this city, be it a wide variety of Chinese cuisine, pan-Asian, European, South American, African, fusion, the list goes on and on. There are restaurants to suit all kinds of tastes and budgets. It is just as easy to find a restaurant serving authentic Chinese cuisine as it is to find a sushi bar or a vegetarian restaurant. Don’t despair if you want to try some of the local cuisine and cannot speak Chinese. Many of the restaurants have menus with pictures on them, so ordering is as simple as pointing. Remember that nearly every restaurant only has chopsticks for utensils, so start practicing!

Medical Services
Beijing has a wide array of medical services you can access. There are several modern hospitals that cater to foreigners, along with many well equipped local hospitals. Pharmacies generally sell both western medicines and traditional Chinese medicines, often with separate sections.
Communication
When in Beijing, you will of course need to be connected. Your primary means will be a cell phone, but you can also have a traditional landline. For internet access, you can either use an internet cafe or get a broadband connection for your residence.
Transportation
Along with Beijing’s transformation into a modern city has come a modern transportation system, and the preparation for the 2008 Olympics has led to even more changes. Beijing has an extensive subway system alongside a newly expanded subway system. While many have their own cars now, the most prevalent car you will see is the taxi, which is generally the fastest way to get where you want to go and is relatively cheap.

Chinese banks are of course the easiest to find throughout the city, however they also tend to have long lines and often no English speaking ability on site. Airport
Beijing’s main airport is the Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK) near Shunyi, which is about 20 km northeast of Beijing city centre. Most domestic and nearly all international flights arrive and depart at the Capital Airport.
